About

CheapSk8 is currently located in Riebeek Kasteel. Dan Wickham the founder of CheapSk8 noticed an increase in skateboarding by the local youth. Many of these skateboarders were/are using outdated or broken boards and don't have immediate access to the tools or knowledge which would allow for safer and better skating.  CheapSk8 aims to empower previously disadvantaged skateboarders by providing educational workshops, the tools, skateboards and the skateboard parts necessary to skate safely. Cheapsk8 has also started a project whereby local young artists are given a blank skateboard to paint on, giving them exposure, the proceeds of which will go to the artist, a skateboard or parts for a previously disadvantaged skater and to cover the costs of the board.

Cheapsk8 made its first public appearance at Solo Studios in 2019 at the Artery showcasing 10 skateboards each painted by a local artist, one of which was sold. Over the past few years Cheapsk8 has held approximately 10 workshops with locals inviting them to skate, on and around the square while assisting with skateboard repairs, at these events talks and workshops are held on skateboarding, skateboarding safely and skateboard care.

The outcome of the proposed Cheapsk8 initiative: it would greatly benefit the greater Riebeek Kasteel Community.

Through cheapSk8s initiative to educate the residential community regarding noise control, safety, and overall youth activity, our aim is to reshape bias. In providing both a controlled and facilitated designated space, and educational workshops, the youth will have a safe and interactive platform for skateboarding. This minimises the risk of unsafe skateboarding, disruptive practice in residential areas and opportunities for disadvantaged yet enthusiastic youth members.

PROJECT PLAN:

Phase 1: bimonthly skating workshops and sessions held at the square of Riebeek Kasteel.

phase 2: Obtain financial backing for skateboards, protective gear and potentially a skate park.

Phase 3: Assist in the design and implementation of a skatepark.

phase 4: Train local participants to become facilitators at local skate park.
